UV conformal coating capabilities at Z-AXIS increase throughput and quality control while improving environmental health and safety (EHS).
What are Conformal Coatings?
Conformal coatings – so named because they conform to the physical structure of their substrate, can be made out of a number of different materials including acrylic, silicone, urethanes, epoxies as well as parylene. New types of coatings, like synthetic rubber, are also being developed to meet specific demands.
UV Curing Advantages
These coatings are cured with ultraviolet light (UV) and protect electronic circuits from harsh environments that may contain moisture or chemical contaminants. UV-curable polymers offer advantages over solvent-based materials for this type of coating in several important areas:
- Throughput. UV-curable materials dry faster, and the DYMAX conveyor system further speeds processing and lowers production costs by reducing handling and the need for products to stand in racks while they cure.
- Quality Control. UV-curable materials provide more even coverage as they are applied and have less shrinkage as they cure, reducing the risk of thin areas or gaps in coverage.
- Environmental. Fewer fumes are released into the environment during curing.
Z-AXIS has a DYMAX UVCS Light Curing Conveyor at its contract design and manufacturing center near Rochester, NY. The system supports the company’s move to add UV-cured conformal coating materials to its PCB assembly capabilities.
The DYMAX UVCS conveyor will also be used to set UV-cured adhesives already in use in various areas of PCB assembly production, improving throughput for this step in the assembly process.
